  19. Subject: Problems Running OCR Due To Insufficient Memory
  20.  
  21. Situation:
  22. ==========
  23. You are experiencing problems working with the optical character 
  24. recognition (OCR) feature in WinFax PRO due to insufficient memory.
  25.  
  26. Solution:
  27. =========
  28. To run OCR, you must have at least 4.5 MB of available memory resources. 
  29. Acceptable memory is 4.5 MB of RAM or any combination of RAM and Windows 
  30. swap file totaling 4.5 MB (for example, 2 MB of RAM and a 2.5 MB swap 
  31. file). You must also be operating Windows in 386 enhanced mode to run OCR.
  32. You can quickly find out how much memory you have available to run OCR. 
  33. After running WinFax, select About Program Manager in the Help menu of 
  34. Windows Program Manager. The About Program Manager box displays the total 
  35. amount of free memory (RAM and swap file).
  36.  
  37. If OCR error messages related to lack of memory appear, try the following.
  38.  
  39. 1.  Press CTRL + ESC to display the Windows Task List, and close any other 
  40.     Windows applications you are currently running to free up memory.
  41.  
  42. 2.  Edit the [AnyFax] section of your WIN.INI file, usually located in 
  43.     your Windows directory (for example C:\WINDOWS).
  44.  
  45.     a)  If you run Windows 3.1, open the Sysedit (System Editor) 
  46.         application in Program Manager to edit the WIN.INI file.
  47.  
  48.     b)  If you run Windows 3.0, open and edit the WIN.INI file in Windows 
  49.         Notepad, or any other basic text editor.
  50.  
  51.     c)  Change the Memsize_300= parameter in the [AnyFax] section 
  52.         as follows:

  54.           Existing:             Change to:
  55.           Memsize_300=1800      Memsize_300=1000
  56.  
  57.     d)  Add the line TempDiskSpace=800 to the [AnyFax] section. This 
  58.         reduces OCR memory allocation from the default of 1,000 KB.
  59.  
  60.     e)  Save your modified WIN.INI file. Restart Windows, and try running 
  61.         OCR again.
  62.  
  63. 3.  If you did not create a permanent Windows swap file or if it has been 
  64.     removed, create one now. For information on creating a permanent swap 
  65.     file, refer to your Microsoft Windows User's Guide.
  66.  
  67. 4.  Disable uneccessary memory-resident applications or device drivers in 
  68.     your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files to optimize system performance. 
  69.     For complete details, refer to your DOS manual or Microsoft Windows 
  70.     User's Guide.
